If those words betray a real sense of enthusiasm, that’s exactly what they’re intended to do. And that’s the way Amanda Wilson begins a conversation describing how much she cares about being an independent manufacturers’ rep serving the commercial door and hardware industry.

According to Wilson, who heads Trenton, Florida–based Wilson Building Solutions, LLC,

“Most people have no idea about the role that commercial doors play in their lives. These doors serve as silent sentries that can save lives. The world of commercial doors is ever-changing, and that’s what has always attracted me.”

Now, after more than 29 (and holding) years, Amanda remains intrigued by the products, the codes, and the people associated with the openings industry.

“One of the things I love is that no two days are ever the same. Each day presents an opportunity to learn something new. Another thing I love is that the niche nature of our industry fosters lasting relationships—simply because no one else truly understands what we do!”

Getting Started

If few people understand what Wilson Building Solutions does, Wilson certainly does. Close to three decades serving the industry has provided her with a clear roadmap to thriving in a niche market.

She began her professional journey working as the membership manager for a health club:

“I realized I didn’t want to do that forever, so I signed up with a temp agency and managed to get a job as a receptionist for a door distributor. I quickly became fascinated by the business and was eager to learn more. Fortunately, the distributorship I worked for valued training and professional development, which allowed me to advance rapidly.”

A Rewarding Career

“Typically, I didn’t know anything about doors, but one day when I got a request for a part and didn’t know what it was, a manager took me under his wing and taught me all about the industry. That was 30 years ago and since then, no day has been the same. The industry has been incredibly rewarding, and I’ve remained committed to it ever since.”

After 12 years on the distribution side of the commercial door openings industry, Amanda felt the need for a new challenge:

“I started my agency in 2010 during a period of significant economic uncertainty. With no prior experience as a manufacturers’ representative or as a business owner, I knew it would be an uphill climb. However, I also believed that if I could build a successful agency during such challenging times, I would be well-positioned for long-term success.”

She acknowledges there was a great deal of trial and error as she built her agency.

“From my time as a distributor and having reps call on us, I certainly had an idea of what a rep was and what they did. Reps always intrigued me. We had some who were more efficient than others, and we always made it a practice to buy from those we liked, trusted, and had good relationships with.”

Joining MANA

“I joined MANA at the recommendation of a fellow rep when I was starting my agency,”

He explained that MANA was an excellent resource for navigating the manufacturer-representative relationship, and he was absolutely right. MANA provides invaluable resources, guidance, and connections that have been instrumental in our success.

Today, Wilson Building Solutions consists of Amanda, a partner, and two team members.

“In 2017, I teamed up with a trusted partner from the industry. I also brought on a family friend for admin support.”

Amanda’s daughter joined the agency in high school and now works alongside her:

“Remember way back almost 30 years ago when we used to type all of our business documents? Well, lo and behold, when she was in middle school taking typing lessons, I decided there were plenty of opportunities to practice replying to agency correspondence. So, since she’s been about 14, she’s always been here. Fast forward, and as time passed and she was looking for an opportunity where she didn’t have to work outside the home, the opportunity was there for her.”

Looking Ahead

“As for the future, I envision her playing a role in any future succession plan. However, there is nothing definitive planned at this time.”

“We’ve been fortunate that prospective principals often seek us out for representation, thanks to referrals and our presence in the industry. At the same time, we’ve expanded internationally in the past year, adding two principals to our line card—one based in Germany and another in Spain.”

Forging Relationships

“Our major consideration is whether a manufacturer will fit in with what we’re already doing. Will their product offering fit in with our customer base? If we feel it’s too far afield and would cause us to build a new base, we’re probably going to steer away from them.

We want to make sure that whatever they offer is something of value to our existing customers.”

“Perhaps the best description of what I’m looking for in a principal is the manufacturer who just ‘gets it.’ Some manufacturers understand the value that the rep provides—others don’t. The ones who do are the ones who ask our opinion before something is changed. They recognize that the rep is hardly a necessary evil but is someone who truly brings value to the relationship.”

However, during a recent stay, I was alarmed to find several fire door violations in the same hotel. This experience reminded me of the critical importance of fire safety in public spaces, especially as we approach the busy summer travel season.

Fire doors are a crucial component of a building’s fire protection system. You can identify a fire door by a label on the hinge edge of the door. When fire doors are not working properly, they cannot perform their essential function, putting lives at risk.

Each violation compromises the integrity of the fire safety system and increases the danger to guests. As families prepare for vacations and getaways, it’s imperative to be aware of these potential hazards and take steps to ensure safety.

Why Are Fire Doors Important

Life Safety: Fire doors are designed to save lives by creating a barrier, slowing the spread of smoke and fire providing the critical time needed to safely evacuate

Removed or damaged labels: Fire Doors should be labeled and easily identified as such. Damaged or missing labels are a violation

Child Safety Week

Child Safety Week is an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness about child safety. It provides an opportunity for us to come together as a community to share practices that help protect children from harm. It is a great way to kick off summer. I will be sharing posts throughout the week to encourage a conversation so that we can all learn from each other.

Like many of you I am a parent and grandparent. Thirty (or so) years ago when I was raising young children I was (and still am) a worst case scenario thinker. I agonized over the littlest things. For instance, every night I would leave our bedroom doors open so that I could hear my children if they needed me. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I learned that was not the best decision. I am so grateful that I did not have to learn that lesson the hard way. Now, I am sharing the practice of closing your bedroom doors at night with you in an effort to keep your children safer in case of a house fire.  

The Underwriters Laboratories’ Firefighter Safety Research Institute urges everyone to close their doors at night as part of their bedtime routine. They created the “Close Before You Doze” public safety education program to spread the word.

Understanding the Message

The “Close Before You Doze” campaign emphasizes the importance of closing bedroom doors at night to enhance fire safety.

Here’s why:

1. **Slows the Spread of Fire**: A closed door can significantly slow the spread of flames, smoke, and heat. This delay can provide precious extra minutes for escape or rescue.

2. **Reduces Toxic Smoke**: Closed doors help to reduce the levels of toxic smoke that can seep into sleeping areas. Smoke inhalation is often more dangerous than the flames themselves during a fire.

3. **Increases Survival Chances**: Studies show that a closed door can dramatically increase the chances of survival during a house fire by creating a barrier that protects sleeping individuals from immediate danger.

The sale is expected to close by June 30, 2022. After, Mesker will operate under a new entity known as Mesker MBM, LP.

How to Replace a Door Closer

How to Replace a Door Closer

Need to know how to replace a door closer quickly and cost effectively? Design Hardware’s 316R series closer makes replacing a door closer a breeze. 

First the Closer 

The 316R is a heavy duty door closer that meets ANSI A156.4 Grade 1 standards. It has a rack and pinion design and a cast aluminum body. It is a non-handed closer with adjustable spring power from size 1-6.   

The 316R has a UL Listing “A” label and can be installed onto a 3 hour fire rated door. It also meets ADA, Americans with Disabilities Act, requirements 

This closer has independent latch and sweep speed controls, as well as back check. The valve are staked to prevent backing valves out too far.  

As a standard, it comes packed with all screws and brackets for regular, top jamb and parallel arm mounting options. 

Finish options include painted aluminum/dark bronze/gold as well as Polished Bright Chrome and Polished Bright Brass. 

As with most Design Hardware products, the 316R Closer comes with a limited life-time warranty. 

Now the Magic, the Mounting Plate 

When you order the Design Hardware 316R, you’re not just getting the heavy duty Grade 1 closer detailed above. The 316R features a special patented mounting plate that enables the 316R closer to retrofit 32 different door closer series from the top manufacturers without having to drill new door prep holes. 

Unless you are replacing with the exact same model and series as the old closer the process of replacing a door closer can be labor intensive. 

When you take the existing closer off the door you are left with the old  mounting holes. Drilling new holes takes time and equipment and often leaves the old holes visible and unsightly. You could be left with a mess.  

Design Hardware’s 316R closer eliminates this concern by including a patented mounting plate that is pre-drilled with mounting holes of the top 33 closers on the market. 

You simply remove the existing closer, line the patented mounting plate up to the existing holes and install the plate to the door. 

You can then easily install the new closer to the mounting plate eliminating the need to drill new holes.

Make the necessary latch & sweep speed and back check adjustments.

Lastly, snap on the cover that is included with this closer for neat, streamlined finish.

Sadly, the growing number of school shootings have prompted the public to come up with solutions to locking down a classroom door without rconsidering the additional problems that these devices create.

There are specific life safety and fire codes that door openings must comply with to ensure the safety of building occupants. Classroom barricade devices violate these life-safety and fire codes.
