Food for Thought

How many sales people still bring goodies with them when they walk into their customer’s offices?  It is a personal choice and one I have decided to do.  Bagels if I have a morning appointment, sandwiches at lunchtime and cookies if it is afternoon.  This was a practice that happened often during the “good times”.  Why then does it not happen now?  Most would say they can’t afford it.  I say you can’t NOT afford it.  With more manufacturer’s fighting for attention from fewer customers it is vital to make a WOW impression.   I may not get an order the first visit, second or even third but the customer will remember me faster than someone who only dropped off a business card.

Remember that you too can get out and make your customers feel special.  Take doughnuts to the jobsite when your doors are being delivered.  Take your best contractor out to lunch to say thanks for the business he has given you.  Not only is it beneficial, it’s fun.

Fail!

OK, so now we know…I Fail at Blogging while traveling!

After a week in Chicago for the DHI Convention, then a week being sick (I was home but in a fog), followed by a few days traveling my South Georgia territory I am now back in my home office ready to re-connect.

Chicago was love at first sight! The high energy, great food and shopping had me hooked from the first day. I had a great time at the DHI Show playing “Corn-Hole”, also called “Bags” with distributors from all over the country. I enjoyed bonding with everyone over a fun (albeit competitive) game. Attendance was better on Wednesday than Thursday but overall a great Show.

During my stay in Chicago I attended my first annual sales meeting with my new professional family.  I was inspired by the positive energy and passion everyone shares for the Mesker & Design companies. I enjoyed meeting and spending time with the entire sales team!

I spent the first three days of this week traveling the southern half of Georgia. It was great hearing positive things at every stop.  I came back with a long to-do list that I’d better get started on.

Happy Fall!

Do you believe in MAGIC

Mentoring a Girl in Construction (MAGIC) Summer Camp is a free one week, day camp designed to introduce high-school girls to exciting careers in the construction industry.  MAGIC has grown exponentially since it’s first camp in 2007.

Two NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction)  members began discussing the details for MAGIC Camp in 2006, and nine months later the first MAGIC Camp was held at Maxwell High School of Technology in Lawrenceville, GA, hosted by the Sugarloaf, Georgia chapter.

Each day campers will go through a series of workshops which could include masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting and office positions such as estimating and project management. Click here for a Video of a MAGIC camp in progress.

NAWIC has been instrumental in spreading the MAGIC Summer Camp program all across the country by hosting these camps.  Already this year, 17 NAWIC chapters have reported hosting camps, but not all the numbers are in yet.  MAGIC is now being recognized all over the country and is becoming one of the most sought-after programs for workforce development.

Skilled tradesmen are needed to volunteer their time, materials and expertise in order to make MAGIC camp a reality.  I urge you to contact you local NAWIC chapter in time for next year’s MAGIC season.

Beautiful Doors of Savannah

Last week I traveled to the beautiful historic city of Savannah, Ga.  It was a productive business trip as I left with promising opportunities but I also managed to fit in some pleasure.  Savannah has gorgeous architecture and it didn’t take me long to find some awesome doors.

I really wanted to show how incredibly tall these next doors were so I asked a passerby to take my picture, he did all right with coffee and donuts in one hand and the camera in the other!

Church in Oglethorpe Square

I did happen to find some peculiar hardware applications…

If all goes well with the prospective customers I met with, I may get to visit this beautiful city often!

Woman in a man’s world!

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend.  If feels good to be at the office after a long week of traveling. With Labor Day behind us, a new season has begun. That season is definitely Football!  We were hardly in a customer’s office for two minutes before talk of football began.  I’d better hone up my skills. It probably would not have gone over well if I had said “So, did anyone catch Thirty Minute Meals last night?”

I happily report that overall the distributors that my sales team and I visited were staying busy.  Of course, everyone is ready for better times but have positioned themselves to weather the storm longer, if need be.  I will be traveling again this week and hope to hear more good news from our family of distributors.

Happy Trails

I’m off on another week of wild traveling, this time through North Florida including the panhandle.  Plan to meet a lot of great customers and find out how I can best help them in growing their business.

It promises to be a great week, as I love meeting people and traveling! I will tweet often and as my BFF always reminds me, take lots of pictures. I have not been to the beaches in the panhandle and look forward to the beautiful views.

Women of Influence

I attended a great seminar on Friday put on by Women of Influence, a local organization in Gainesville, founded by Jill Nash.  The seminar was entitled The Power of One.  From the title you can guess that the seminar was about the difference that one person can make.

It was truly inspiring to hear speakers from three charitable organizations explain how they make a difference in the lives of many.  The organizations were the Gainesville Community Ministry, Arbor House, and Sebastian Ferraro.  All were dedicated to helping those in need, with both short and long term programs.

The Arbor House struck a chord in my heart.  Arbor House helps homeless single mothers by providing them a safe place to live and assistance with long-term goals that lead to self-sufficiency. I am inspired to find out what programs my small town offers to women in similar circumstances and how I can help.  Thanks to Women of Influence for reminding me that I feel my best when I help others.

Back to School

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  Many families across the nation are adjusting to the demands of a new school year.  It seems like just yesterday my children were starting kindergarten but this year my three are going to college! Boy, how time flies.  It is sad to me that while I was walking the campus with them last week that their security and safety was first on my mind.  When we got home, I downloaded their school’s emergency procedures manual to review with them.  They weren’t thrilled, but it made me feel better. I will also make it a point to learn about their security system and offer my assistance if there is any need.  Just what they need right, a concerned parent that is in the door & hardware industry!  Here’s to a happy and safe school year for all of our children.
