Happy New Year

Happy 2014!

shutterstock_146971178 copyI love new beginnings. The feeling that you are working with a clean slate and all things are possible.  This time of year is when thousands of us declare things we are going to change, remove or add to our lives. Are you a resolutions maker?

My goals this year revolve around income (I want more of it!), debt (I want less of it!), health & fitness (focus on how I feel as much as how I look), and family (more quality as the quantity ebbs due to travel).

It appears my list is not unique.  Here is a list of the top 10 American New Year’s Resolutions.

The top 10 New Years Resolution for 2014:

  1. Lose Weight
  2. Get Organized
  3. Spend Less, Save More
  4. Enjoy Life to the Fullest
  5. Staying Fit and Healthy
  6. Learn Something Exciting
  7. Quit Smoking
  8. Help Others in Their Dreams
  9. Fall in Love

10. Spend More Time with Family

Statistics show that 45% of Americans are habitual resolution makers with only 8% actually achieving those declarations.

To give yourself a better chance at achieving the items on your list, you may want to give as much attention to the “how” as to the “what”.  According to the experts, goals should be S.M.A.R.T. That is Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time-Bound.  Check out Michael Hyatt’s Blog Post “The Beginner’s Guide to Goal Setting” for more detailed information.

A good tip is to break your goals up into quarterly mini-goals.  After all, you can’t lose 50 pounds without first losing 1 and you can’t run a marathon if you can’t run around the block!

I would love to hear some of your goals.  Statistics show we are more likely to follow through if we share our plans with others. Comment below and good luck!

Correct Door Closer Mounting Position

It is no secret that I take pictures of doors. Myself, as well as others in my industry, like to bring awareness to the blatant disregard for fire and life safety codes and requirements we see during our travels. We also like to take pictures of unique hardware applications, beautiful and unusual doors, etc.

IMG_2989

But sometimes I will take a picture of an opening showing an issue that is a little less dramatic.

That happened at a Subway restaurant recently. I took this picture of these restroom doors because the closers would have been much better placed on the opposite “push” side of the door.

No major life safety violations, not a beautiful 10′ ornate wood door on a church with antique hardware, so alone not “post worthy”!

But imagine my delight when later that same day I was in a convenience store and noticed the exact same scenario.IMG_2991 Poof, a blog post was born in the mind of a door & hardware industry professional!

Again, no code violations but a little fore-thought could have helped these openings be more aesthetically pleasing.  Of course, the doors to the right have many other issues that contribute to their unsightliness.

Some insight by the hardware installer and a simple parallel arm mounting plate would have tucked these closers out of site on the other side of the door.

On new projects the suggested mounting position should be noted in the hardware schedule. In the after market situation an installer should carefully read the manufacturer’s installation instructions to determine the best mounting application for each door he is working on.

Not too long ago, a parallel arm mounting plate had to be noted if desired.  Now, most closers on the market come packed to be mounted in any of the 3 popular positions, regular arm mount, parallel arm mount and top jamb mount.

IMG_3065This blog post was destined to become reality when I found this third picture of side by side restroom doors.

Aesthetics is not the only concern when determining the correct door closer mounting position.

It is important on exterior doors to make sure the closer is on the interior side of the opening out of the weather. The change in temperature affects the thickness of the hydraulic fluid in the closer body.  This could make the door close too slowly  or slam depending on the weather.

These closers are mounted in the “top jamb” position and would have benefited from a “regular arm” mount position on the “pull” side or interior side of the door in this case.

Going Up?

I am super busy (yay!) and wasn’t going to post today, but this came across my desk.  It’s not my scope but I couldn’t resist. It makes a perfect Wordless Wednesday pic!  Have a great day.

“Be So Good They Can’t Ignore You”

“Be so good they can’t ignore you.”

This quote by Steve Martin was mentioned during a podcast that I was listening to a couple of weeks ago.  The quote was so good it stuck with me.   Below is the context in which he offered this quote as advice.

When people ask me how do you make it in show business or whatever, what I always tell them — And nobody ever takes note of it ‘cuz it’s not the answer they wanted to hear. What they want to hear is here’s how you get an agent, here’s how you write a script, here’s how you do this — But I always say, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.”  If somebody’s thinking, “How can I be really good?”, people are going to come to you. It’s much easier doing it that way than going to cocktail parties.

Although the quote was in answer to how to make it in show business, it is timeless advice for anyone.

Do you strive to be the best at what you do or are you satisfied being only “as good as” your competition.  I hope as the week goes by this quote sticks with you, too.  I hope it makes you consider what you could be doing better. It certainly did that for me.

Construction Climbs!

Good news to get us going for the week!

May Construction Climbs 5 Percent

NEW YORK, June 20, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — At a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $495.7 billion, new construction starts in May advanced 5% from the previous month, according to McGraw Hill Construction, a division of McGraw Hill Financial. Much of the upward lift came from nonresidential building, which registered moderate growth for the second month in a row after its sluggish performance at the outset of 2013.

Construction In My Small Town

I live in a town with a population of just over 2000 people.  Trenton, Florida is located in Gilchrist County, the smallest county in Florida.  My children graduated from a class of less than 100 students. Gainesville, which is approximately 30 miles to the east, is the nearest city of any size.

Trenton boasts it is home to the one stop light in the entire county.  Yes, you heard that right. We have one, only one, traffic light in the entire county!

Not much happens in a small town so we were all excited when a new construction project started on a lot near the above mentioned one and only light.  I asked around about what was going to be built.  I absolutely did not believe the answer I heard, even though I heard it from several people.  I went on line to check the story out.  It turned out to be correct, a McDonalds was coming to Trenton.  A McDonald’s?  In Trenton, Fl?  Crazy but true.

IMG_0208I stopped by the site the other morning on my way to civilization and asked if I could take some pictures of a HM Frame that had recently been set in the block wall.   They were very generous in letting me onto the site to take some pics.  I can never get enough pictures to use in my training presentations.

The picture to the left shows the frame floating above the ground.  The mason told me that this was the result of the block being laid prior to the foundation being poured.  This way the work needing to be completed before the foundation, such as plumbing, wouldn’t hold up the overall progress of the project.

I was in a hurry and only took pictures of the frame, but plan to visit frequently to get more pictures for you.

Wow, a McDonalds…in Trenton!

Are You Listening?

IMG_2479I’ve spent the last few weeks going over how I use Siri to be productive while I’m driving.  I’ve probably exhausted all of your patience with that topic.  There is one more thing I would like to share before leaving the topic of safely and productively using your drive time. Don’t worry, this one doesn’t include summoning Siri.

I wanted to share the wealth of free information and entertainment that can accessed through podcasts.

PodcastAppPodcasts are a type of digital file, usually audio, that can be downloaded to an mp3 player. The word podcast is derived from broadcast and “pod” from the success of iPods, because most podcasts are listened to on portable media players.

Simply download the podcast app and you can browse through many categories, such as Arts, Business, Comedy, Sports, and more.  I am sure you will find something that interests you.

My favorite category is business.  Below is a list of most downloaded podcasts from iTunes in the business category.  The Dave Ramsey Show, EntrepreneurOnFire and EntreLeadership are some of my favorites.   I hope you take the time to check into podcasts and find some you enjoy.

Fire Door Inspections & Healthcare Facilities

On May 30th, I had the pleasure of attending the DHI First Coast chapter meeting in Jacksonville, Florida.   The speaker was DHI’s CEO, Jerry Heppes Sr,. CAE.

Jerry covered a variety of subjects during his hour at the podium.  I will be writing posts on each subject Jerry covered starting with his first topic:  fire door inspections.   Jerry gave an informative update of the Door Security & Safety Foundation’s progress on promoting the adoption and enforcement of the Annual Fire Door Inspection requirement.

Since the addition of the requirement for annual inspections in the NFPA80 2007 edition, progress to enforce the code has been slow but steady.  As of now, 25 states have adopted the code but not all are actively enforcing it.  There is reluctance to burdening building owners with the considerable costs that could be involved to bring openings compliant during such a slow economy.

iStock_000007199930SmallThe annual inspection requirements have had an enormous impact on health care facilities.  For facilities to be able to accept Medicare/Medicaid patients, they must comply with CMS, Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services. The CMS, which is responsible for administering the Medicare/Medicaid dollars, will soon be adopting NFPA 80 2007.  The Joint Commission, a non-profit entity that oversees the auditing of HC facilities is also advancing the initiative.

The Foundation continues to reach out to entities across the country and stress the importance of these inspections.  Their current efforts include communications with ASHE, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering.

Jerry shared that his offices used to receive a couple phone calls a year about the NFPA80 change, now the number of calls has increased to a couple times a month.  Proof their efforts are seeing results.  This requirement is not going away and will be strengthened with the 2013 edition.

The current edition states that the inspections are to be performed by a “knowledgeable” person.  The 2013 edition changes knowledgeable to “qualified”.

He touched on the success of the online FDAI course, a perfect segue to his next topic, The Door & Hardware Institute’s many education platforms.  You will learn more about that in my second post.

During the meeting I was nominated and voted in as secretary of the chapter.  Which will lead me to my third post on DHI’s forward thinking approach to the structure of their chapters.   I was intrigued by some of the ideas they are tossing around.  I hope you will stay tuned for more details!

A special thank you to Jerry for attending our meeting and providing such an informative presentation. Your support is very appreciated.

6 Month Old Opening, Disgraceful

Below are pictures of a 6 month old Subway restaurant restroom door.  Clearly cost was a factor.  The residential grade privacy set proved to be no match for the 1 3/4″ solid core commercial wood door and has already failed.  The closer does slowly close the door, but doesn’t have the power to latch it. Did the owners know what they were paying for?
