Yikes! I’ve committed to a Tough Mudder, now what!

Friday posts are for fun!  That is not in debate. What is in debate is whether what I have gotten myself into can be considered “fun!”

I have officially declared that I’m all in as a team member for the St. Louis Tough Mudder  Obstacle Course. I know, right!  What was I thinking.

Not familiar with a Tough Mudder course? This will catch you up to speed.

Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, 700,000 inspiring participants worldwide to date, and more than $5 million raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world. But Tough Mudder is more than an event, it’s a way of thinking. By running a Tough Mudder challenge, you’ll unlock a true sense of accomplishment, have a great time, and discover a camaraderie with your fellow participants that’s experienced all too rarely these days.

Although I work out 4-5 times a week, I have never been a runner.  So, the training started Monday morning.  I am following the Jeff Galloway training method in hopes that having a plan will be most beneficial. I have never been embarrassed of my age, so I will tell you that my 46 year old body is letting me know what it thinks about the training so far!

But, the Tough Mudder is way more than just being able to run 12 miles.  Here is a copy of the St. Louis obstacle course.  Click on the map for examples of the obstacles that we “STEEL STIFFENED” team members, along with hundreds of others will be facing on September 14th.

Although my family thinks I’m crazy, and some have expressed their doubts in my ability to finish the course, I say a resounding “YES” this is fun!

Design Hardware & Mesker catalogs on your iPad

Holding iPad copyI have been using iBooks on my iPad to lighten my load.  Can you believe that the device shown on the left can house the contents of your entire bookshelf?  It’s true.

When I am working on your quote requests in my hotel room into the wee hours of the morning (anything for my customers) I did not pack multiple catalogs in my suitcase.  I can access both Design Hardware & Mesker price lists with the touch of my finger.

This could be a great tool to have on a job site or in a business meeting.  Let me show you how to download our price books in iBooks.

  • While on your tablet, go to www.meskerdoor.com,
  • Click on the “download library” tab at the top.
  • Then, click on “pricing tools” from the list
  • Fill in appropriate login & password information (if you do not know what your login information is, give me a call or send me an email)
  • Select the adobe version of “Mesker Price Book”

IMG_0188When the price book loads you will see a tab appear that says WholePriceBook.pdf and to the right, an icon that says “Open in iBooks” if this disappears, just gently touch the screen anywhere and it will reappear.  Click the “Open in iBooks” icon.  The price list will then open in iBooks and will be saved there for future use.

Repeat for Design Hardware.

Correct Installation of Exit Devices

Design Hardware knows how important the correct installation of our products is to your bottom line.   From the contractor to the tenant, bad installation can wreak havoc on your productivity.

A QR code is a sort of bar code readable by a special scanner that can be downloaded to your smart phone.  These codes can be used for a multitude of things.   Give it a try now, you can actually scan the code in the picture! When you scan a Design Hardware QR code you are immediately directed to our “Installation Videos” web page.   The installer can choose from several video demonstrations on closers & exits.

How I Use Siri – A productivity siries

We have all seen the commercials introducing Siri to the already awesome iPhone feature line-up. She can direct you to the nearest Starbucks, find a restaurant nearby that delivers and a host of other things.

We’ve had friends show us the silly questions you can ask her. This was my all time favorite.

I am sad to say that cracks me up every time!

But, I have actually found Siri to be a helpful assistant.  I use her most when I am driving and can access her through my headphones with the push of a button.  I do wish I could change her voice, maybe to that of an Australian male.  I’m sure that’s in the works!

For a list of the most popular ways people use Siri follow these instructions.  Push and hold the home key to wake her up.  Then touch the “i” after the “what can I help you with?”   She is so willing to help!  A list of popular commands appear.

IMG_2031Since I travel a lot, one of the ways I utilize this technology is to ask what weather conditions are like in the area I am traveling to.

Here is an example:

I am given a 6 day forecast as shown in the screen shot on the left.  That particular day she delivered wonderful news for the weather in Knoxville.

Hollow Metal 4″ Frame Head

One of the topics that I’m covering in my hollow metal 101 class is when to use a hollow metal 4″ Frame Head.

We run into this application most when dealing with masonry block walls.  The use of the 4” head is all about the lintel.  A lintel is a horizontal architectural member supporting the weight above an opening, such as a window or a door.

The lintel ensures that the weight of the blocks above the opening do not rest on the frame header.  This would eventually lead to the frame head sagging and cause the door to rub and possibly not close as the building settles.

Let’s take a moment and focus on the wall assembly itself.  A typical masonry block in the US measures 16x8x8, and is undersized approximately 3/8” to allow for mortar joints. Thus a completed layer, or course, of block measures 8” in height.

The door shown is a 3’0 x 6’8” with an overall opening requirement of 40” x 82” to allow for the 2” face of the hollow metal frame.  You can see how the lintel had to be notched to accommodate the height of the frame.

Per industry standard, which according to this picture does not mean always, an exterior hollow metal door in a masonry wall measures 7’0” in height, using a standard 2” frame face would require an opening size of 40” by 86”.

Following the example above, considering the height of the courses of block, we would need a 6” notch in the door lintel.  This would leave only a 2” strip spanning the opening to carry the load.  The structural integrity of the lintel would be critically compromised.

A full lintel could be laid across the 11th row of blocks at 88”, leaving a 2” gap.  Below, are examples of how this 2″ gap is usually dealt with.  Not necessarily an aesthetically pleasing solution.

This is the point where the 4″ head comes in to play.  By providing a 4″ head on a 7’0 door the 2″ gap is taken care of with a nice finished look.

When I planned on creating this lesson, I had in mind to take the pictures I needed during my travels throughout my territory.  I had no idea how difficult it would be to find pictures showing the correct use of a 4″ Head.  I visited the backs of many strip centers and warehouses all in my quest for education!

Note: when dealing with existing masonry openings, you can use the 4” head to get creative.  There might have been a non-standard door height in the opening previously, but by using a 4”head you might be able to use stock material.  Just play with the measurements.

A soothing break from HM Doors!

I took this short video of Rainbow Falls in GSMNP so that I could remember the soothing sound.  I need to loop the audio so that I can fall asleep to it, or whenever I need a short break from selling HM Doors! Have a great weekend.

How Do You Take Field Measurements?

How do you take field measurements? Are you utilizing today’s technology when you have to go to a jobsite to measure doors or frames for replacement?

I have been playing around with different apps trying to come up with an efficient way to take field measurements on a tablet.  I found adobe ideas, an app that lets you import a picture and “write” on it.  If you have a tablet that has a camera, you can take a picture at a jobsite, import it to adobe ideas and make notes right on the picture.

Taken a step further, you can create a form, save it as a jpeg (a picture file), import it into adobe ideas and fill out the form on your tablet.

For example, here is a form that I created to ensure all vital information needed to replace an existing door or frame is captured.  This form is available on the “Doors 101” tab on my website.  It is a work in progress and suggestions are welcomed!

You can import this picture into adobe ideas and fill in the blanks.  I found that using a stylus is neater than your fingertip. A stylus is a pen shaped device used to interact with a touch screen.

Once completed, you save the file for your records.  You can email the file right at the jobsite and/or print when you get back to the office.

Good News Mondays

It’s starting to be a trend to bring you good news on Mondays.  It starts the week of on a good note.

Roof_framing_half_sheathedAccording to the “Marketplace” section of the Wall Street Journal, plywood is in hot demand.  An increase in demand combined with limited supplies have bumped prices up nearly 50%.

They also report that this is the best sign yet that the housing market is truly on the mend.

After a major decrease over the last 5 years, Georgia-Pacific is having to bump up production significantly to accommodate large customers such as Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Georgia-Pacific, as well as Boise Cascade, the second largest producer of softwood plywood in the US, is adding employees and increasing hours to meet the increasing demand.

We all know this means the recovery of the commercial market is right around the corner.

DHI Executive Summit

I received an email from DHI advertising their Executive Summit event in Las Vegas April 7th-9th.  Their opening line was “hope is not a strategy”.  It immediately reminded me of an exercise Tony Robbins had us participate in during his “Unleash the Power Within” Seminar.

Play along with me a minute. Put yourself in a state of hope.  Imagine yourself hoping for something, something you really want.  What is your body language like when you are hoping?  Go ahead, join in on this exercise.  How are you sitting/standing, where are your hands when you are hoping? How are your shoulders? What is your facial expression, what are your eyebrows doing? How are you breathing?

OK, shake that off…take a deep breath and a stretch.

Humor me and let’s try one more thing.  Now, I would like you to put yourself in a state of anticipation. Imagine something you really want is about to be yours.  It is a certainty. This something you want is within your grasp and all you have to do reach out and grab it. It is right there!  How is your body language when you are anticipating an exciting certainty? Did your breathing change immediately?  Did your shoulders rise at least an inch!  I bet you are smiling. What are your hands doing now?

I would say DHI is most definitely correct in saying hope is not a strategy!  Do you have a strategy? If so, is it up to date with the changing times? Do you know what’s coming next? If you do not have a strategy, seriously, don’t you think you should?

Please take time and read over the mailing that DHI sent out a few weeks ago detailing the agenda of their Executive Summit.  If you didn’t get one, I’m sure DHI would be happy to send you out one.

In the packet, DHI states “It’s not about being reactive in your actions, it’s about being intentional in your strategy”.

It’s the only place where you can gather with like-minded, progressive thinking distributor executives from your own industry to hear the results of industry-specific research on the convergence between door and hardware and the integrated security distribution channels.  The Executive Summit is your exclusive opportunity to learn proven best practice techniques, and receive invaluable tools to capitalize on new growth opportunities, manage the threats, and increase actionable outcomes as you face this and other critical issues.

Here is a list of reasons DHI gives to consider attending the DHI Executive Summit:

  • A convergence is occurring between the door and hardware and the integrated security industries.
  • Traditional distribution channel boundaries are becoming less clearly defined
  • The end user needs and demands attention. Will if be your attention he receives?

After reviewing the entire packet I was sold on the value of this summit.  I am very regretful that due to previous calendar commitments I will not be able to attend.  If you are planning on retiring or selling out in the next few years, probably no burning reason to go.  But, if you are like most of us and plan to be in this industry for a decade of more, this summit will be of great value in making sure you are able to be.
